Greater Bibleway Missionary Baptist Church was founded in May 1975 under the leadership of Reverend Lewis, Jr. At that time the idea of a church preaching the Gospel and ministering to the total individual without regard for personal past and solely focusing on relationship building with God the Maker, Jesus Christ our Savior and the Holy Spirit was considered radical. That ideal is the foundation reflecting what Greater Bibleway has evolved into today.
In March 2002, when Dr. Toris Young assumed the mantle as the second succeeding Pastor of the Greater Bibleway Baptist Church membership had 35 active members. Building on the foundation of his predecessor Dr. Young, becoming the living word of Jesus Christ, cast a net -- and in less than nine months had more than 1500 parishioners.
Under the guidance of Pastor Young and with the blessing of the Holy Trinity, Greater Bibleway was able to affirm its position as pinnacle sanctuary of the community. All church property is paid in full. Our locations include a site at 2934-2936 Joliet Street that houses our Education Department, Computer Lab, Cafeteria, Administration Offices, and our Children’s Church; our main sanctuary is at 2940 Joliet Street; 8493 S. Claiborn Ave is the location of our Housing Development Corp. as well as 50 elderly units; 8490 S. Claiborn Ave. is our church housing development with 75 units. Greater Bibleway is now in a massive rebuilding program
